This is the official walkthrough for Checkmate in Red.


The Red Realm should look very familiar, albeit a bit more colorful. The layout is the same as the Pale Realm, but your tasks are not.

Red Water Wheel Courtyard

Checkmate in Red - Houses

Step forward out of the alcove and drop down to the floor to pick off a couple of Red Pawns. Descend the stairs and jump into the water left of the bridge. Turn around and swim toward the gap in the wall. Jump to grab the rope and climb to the top of the tower.

Red Water Wheel Courtyard, Upper Level

Cross the bridge to the next tower and turn left. Slaughter the Red Pawns on the next bridge. Enter the red door. Pick up the third Demon Die. Go through two more red doors and look out of the window to see the White Queen executed. You're too late. Continue down the hall as it twists and turns. A Bishop and two Knights attempt to halt your revenge mission. Ascend a short staircase and turn right. Carefully contend with two Red Rooks (on the ground) and one Red Bishop (above). Descend a short staircase, turn right, and go up another short one.

Turn left to enter the ornate double doors. At the end of the passageway, drop into the hole in the floor. Walk out to the drawbridge to fight the Red King.

The Red King

The Red King has all the powers of his minions plus several others.

  • He strikes with all the force of a Rook with his scepter.
  • He throws diamonds. These move much faster and track better than the Diamond Card Guard's projectiles. Jump erratically to avoid them.
  • His Majesty fires an evil energy beam similar to the Bishop's. It's almost impossible to escape unscathed from this beam.
  • He tosses grenades faster than you can avoid them.

The Red King is very quick, but not invulnerable. You can win a hand-to-hand battle if you have sufficient combat skill. If you can sidestep-attack quickly and erratically and strike with the Mallet, you can do quite well.

Still, there's an easier way. Use your Strength of Will to keep the Red King occupied. Throw a Jackbomb to distract the Red King's attention away from you. Then, refuel your Strength of Will as Meta-Essence Crystals appear randomly in the corners of the chessboard.

When the Red King has his hands full with Jackbombs, you can snipe from afar. The Ice Wand may be useful here. When the Red King perishes, you are transported to an even stranger place.
