— Tweedledum and Tweedledee[2]

Tweedledum and Tweedledee work for the Mad Hatter, running his asylum in Looking Glass Land, and they are not too kind towards patients.[3] The larger Tweedle is Tweedledee, and the smaller Tweedle is Tweedledum.

History

Through the Looking-Glass

Alice meeting Tweedledum and Tweedledee

Alice meeting the Tweedles.

When Alice stepped through the Looking Glass, she soon discovered Tweedledee and Tweedledum who were standing together perfectly still like wax works. They greeted Alice with their nonsensical manner of saying, "How do you do?" and shook hands repeatedly. They told Alice the story of the Walrus and the Carpenter and both of them noticed the Red King dozing off. The Tweedles later got into a battle with each other all because Tweedledee broke Tweedledums' new rattle. After a while they started having doubts about the fight until a monstrous crow swooped down and frightened them away. They were not seen again.

Alice meeting them in Mirror Image.

When Alice encountered them in Mirror Image, she was reminded of the Orderlies at Rutledge Asylum whose sadistic teasing and lascivious taunts were analogous to the Tweedles.[3] These orderlies were revealed to also be twins, and nephews of the Rutledge superintendent, who often force-fed Alice until she got revenge by stabbing one in the cheek with a spoon.[4] They had taken on a cannibalistic bent, as they commented on her being too scrawny for a decent snack, to which Alice offered to "fill their bellies," presumably with weapons of fire.[3] During Alice's battle against them, they duplicated like matryoshka dolls. Upon defeat, they fell over, their bodies bisected, and disappeared.

Alice: Madness Returns

The Tweedles with Nurse Cratchet trepanning Alice

One of the torture methods performed on Alice by the twins.

The twins were only part of Alice's hallucination where she was once again a patient in Rutledge Asylum. They often took the place of the orderly brothers and assisted Nurse Cratchet in the "treatments" for Alice's condition. They were seen performing trepanning and bloodletting using leeches on Alice.[2] They can later be seen in Ward One on the ceiling, while their real-world counterparts are on the floor below. They banter nonsense about a catacomb, a cat, fox, pigeons, and a henhouse. They are also listed in the Extra Content as "Orderly Tweedles", each twin shown in reality and Wonderland.

Appearance

American McGee's Alice

The Tweedles wore red-and-white striped shirts, white breeches, and brown shoes. They also wore a small blue-and-green cap and wielded wooden swords during battle. They had white eyes with no irises and had a burly build.

The Tweedles in Alice's hallucination still wore the same red-and-white striped shirts, white breeches, and brown shoes. However, Tweedledum's breeches had a front flap and their caps were replaced with red-and-white propeller caps. They still retained their white eyes and burly build, although Tweedledee's lower jaw noticeably showed his sharp lower teeth.

Trivia

Asylum Tweedles

Alice: Asylum concept art.

  • It was revealed that they were present with Cratchet when Alice was given electroshock therapy sessions and it is hinted that the Tweedles sexually harassed her through Tweedledee's lines "Nothing comforts a tummy-ache like a jab in the nether regions with a very hot poker" and "Demolish the past including the time I touched her, ehm..."[5]
  • They speak in gibberish sentences.
  • They are also shown to insult each other when not tormenting Alice.
  • The twins appear to be wearing some form of Victorian football kit. The reason for this design is unknown, but it could be implied that the kits reflect the interests of the orderlies.
  • Concept art for Alice: Asylum shows them looking younger and smaller.
